Amplifying Voices for Change: Disability Pride Month

In the words of Mary Fashik: July 1st marks the beginning of #DisabilityPrideMonth. When the clock strikes midnight, you won’t see flashy merchandise. Companies won’t be changing their logos, and celebrities won’t be flooding social media with posts. The reality is, the disabled community still faces a significant lack of equity and equality.

But we can change that. Disability Pride Month is not just a time to acknowledge the struggles; it’s a time to celebrate the strength, resilience, and contributions of the disabled community. It’s about recognising the need for real, tangible changes in our society.

How can you make a difference? Start by following disability advocates and organisations to educate yourself and others. Share posts that raise awareness and foster understanding. Engage with the community by commenting with your thoughts and personal stories. Every voice matters, and together, we can amplify our call for change.

Let’s make #DisabilityPrideMonth a catalyst for real change. Use this time to push for the equity and equality that the disabled community deserves. Let’s rise up, just like Andra Day sings in her powerful anthem “Rise Up.” The song embodies the spirit of overcoming adversity and striving for a better, more inclusive world.

Join me in making a difference. Together, we can push forward, break barriers, and create a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. 🌟

The more advocacy the better – “fostering understanding” as you say is so important – yay you!
(I live with chronic migraine which is an invisible disability and we tend to be treated as neurotic and highly strung, as if we made the pain ourselves, rather than it being a complex neurological condition that makes life harder.)

Thanks Linda for the comment. Who better than to know our own bodies than ourselves, yet the medical model will insist on putting us in certain boxes. I do hope you’re well and that today is a good day.

Thank you so much! Today is a good day (so far) – I try to be as positive as I can as often as I can – more joy seems to lessen the pain.

Boxes are boring… but I do understand why the medical profession uses them to save time – but no two people are the same, so it seems silly to assume that a one-size-fits-all approach to anything medical can work.

Take care too – have a wonderful upcoming weekend and keep blogging! xx
